Reducing repeat exclusions through a whole-school inclusion approach

At Carmel College in Darlington, leaders are reducing repeat exclusions and lost learning by embedding a whole-school approach to inclusion. Through The Difference’s Inclusive Leadership Course (ILC), staff introduced trauma-informed practice, improved tracking of rewards and sanctions, and focused on relational approaches to behaviour.

Early results show significant improvements, including a 50% reduction in suspensions and repeat internal exclusions, alongside rising attendance and increased positive recognition for pupils with SEND and pupil premium. The work is helping staff intervene earlier and build a more consistent, inclusive behaviour culture across the school.
